CrimeaSOS: Iryna Danylovych plans to go on hunger strike

21 / 03 / 2023

The life of Iryna Danylovych is again in danger due to the lack of proper medical care – the journalist plans to go on hunger strike. The Head of the Board of CrimeaSOS Oleksii Tilnenko informed on the following.

“Due to the lack of proper medical care and ignoring the state of health, the life of Danylovych is once again in danger. As CrimeaSOS learned, citizen journalist Iryna Danylovych lost consciousness during transportation to the occupation Feodosia City Court. Despite the fact that her state of health was rapidly deteriorating, the Simferopol pre-trial detention centre issued documents on the absence of medical obstacles for transportation”, — said Oleksii Tilnenko.

According to available information, a week prior to these events, Iryna Danylovych received a medical examination, which she needed since the end of last year due to acute otitis media. However, it was exclusively demonstrative, so the diagnosis was not determined. Instead, the “doctor”, who was admitted to the pre-trial detention centre, offered to refer the journalist to a psychiatrist.

“In addition, Iryna Danylovych announced that as a sign of protest against abuse, she was going to announce a dry hunger strike”, — Oleksii Tilnenko added.

Due to threat to life of Iryna Danylovych, her lawyer plans to submit a statement regarding the crime committed by the “doctor” under Article 124 of the criminal code of the russian federation “Failure to provide assistance to a patient without valid reasons”.

Defence of Danylovych plans to submit the same statement regarding the “emergency doctor” who refused to provide the journalist with medical care when she felt ill during court debates. This was documented as Iryna Danylovych’s voluntary refusal to be hospitalized, although there are no documents regarding this in the case file.

A proper legal assessment of this fact would be another proof that the journalist was deprived of the opportunity to defend herself in the court of first instance due to poor health.

On December 28, 2022, the so-called “Feodosia City Court” announced the sentence to the citizen journalist Iryna Danylovych. She was sentenced to 7 years in prison and fined 50,000 rubles for allegedly “storing explosives”. CrimeaSOS previously reported that the lack of proper medical care in penitentiary institutions led to the deaths of two Crimean political prisoners and poses a mortal threat to others.
