Non-existent: what to do with birth registration in the occupied territories?

19 / 12 / 2023

On December 22 at 16:00 CrimeaSOS will hold a public discussion “Non-existent: what to do with birth registration in the occupied territories?” in the Osvitoria Hub space. The experts will raise the issue of the birth registration procedure and the access of children from the TOT to social life.

Why are children from the occupied territories who do not have a Ukrainian birth certificate deprived of many rights? What problems does the lack of a child’s birth certificate create for the family? How many unregistered children are in the TOT and why it poses threats?

During the event, experts will try to outline these issues not only during the discussion, but also in a presentation with eloquent statistics and stories of children who suffered due to the imperfection of the civil status registration procedure.

The problem of registration of facts of birth in the occupied territories remains out of the attention of Ukrainian society. However, this issue concerns each of us: the consequences of ignoring the problem may pose a danger to the future of Ukraine.

The state’s indifference to this topic may lead to the aggravation of future challenges“, — CrimeaSOS lawyer Anna Rassamakhina emphasizes. — “In fact, additional problems that could have been avoided are now being created for future generations“.

Children born in the occupation are citizens of Ukraine, and the task of the state is to ensure their access to rights and opportunities. The adoption of a simplified birth registration law could prevent the territories from being left in a legal vacuum after the deoccupation.

In order to find ways to solve the problem, the CrimeaSOS lawyer Anna Rassamakhina will be joined by the Deputy Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine to the ARC Denys Chystikov and the lawyer from the NGO Public Holding “Influence Group” Mariia Krasnenko. During the discussion, they will highlight that the issue of registration of newborns in the TOT requires the development of effective legal mechanisms now.

📅 Date and time: December 22, 16:00—17:00

📍 Venue: small conference hall in Osvitoria HUB (Kyiv, 2 Kniaziv Ostrozkyh str.)
