CrimeaSOS: the total term of sentences for Crimean political prisoners during the great war is more than 915 years

4 / 10 / 2023

The total term of sentences for victims of politically motivated persecution in Crimea since the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine amounts to 915 years and 5 months. CrimeaSOS analyst Yevhenii Yaroshenko talked about it.

“Since February 24, 2022, at least 78 Crimean political prisoners have been sentenced to a total of 915 years and 5 months of imprisonment”, — says the analyst.

Since the beginning of the occupation of Crimea by russia, Crimean political prisoners, after receiving a sentence, often become victims of illegal transfers to russian penitentiary facilities. In 2023 alone, 25 people were transferred to russian prisons and colonies.

We would like to remind that transfers of civilians, including political prisoners, from the Crimean Peninsula to the territory of russia are a war crime. With such actions, the occupiers violate Articles 49 and 76 of the IV Geneva Convention. According to Article 76 of the IV Geneva Convention, “persons accused of offences shall be detained in the occupied country, and if convicted they shall serve their sentences therein”.

Most victims of politically motivated persecution in Crimea are representatives of the Crimean Tatar people. According to Yevhenii Yaroshenko, the russian occupation authorities in Crimea are trying to show the Crimean Tatars as extremists and saboteurs.

On October 6, 2023, the event “Persecuted and Detained: Stories of Crimean Political Prisoners” will be held within the framework of the OSCE conference in Warsaw (Warsaw Human Dimension Conference). CrimeaSOS is among the organizers.
