Persecuted and detained. CrimeaSOS will talk about the persecution of Crimean Tatars in Crimea within the framework of the OSCE conference

On October 6, 2023, the event “Persecuted and Detained: Stories of Crimean Political Prisoners” will be held within the framework of the OSCE conference in Warsaw (Warsaw Human Dimension Conference). CrimeaSOS is among the organizers.

The event will be attended by representatives of human rights organizations and relatives of victims of politically motivated persecution in Crimea, in particular: 

  • Sabina Iliasova, co-coordinator of CrimeaSOS; 
  • Viktoriia Nesterenko, project manager of the Human Rights Centre ZMINA; 
  • Anastasiia Moskvychova, Front Line Defenders; 
  • Yuliia Horbunova, senior specialist of Human Rights Watch in Ukraine; 
  • Aziz Umerov, brother of Crimean political prisoner Leniie Umerova; 
  • Bronyslav Danylovych, father of political prisoner Iryna Danylovych (video link). 

Panellists will discuss: 

  • stories of political prisoners: statistics, profiles, categories of political cases; 
  • falsification of criminal cases in Crimea; 
  • persecution of human rights defenders, activists and media workers; 
  • persecution of Crimean Tatars and Muslims; 
  • violation of the rights of political prisoners: failure to provide medical care, torture and deportation; 
  • search for mechanisms to bring representatives of the occupation authorities to justice; 
  • recommendations for the OSCE and its member states. 

Organizers of the discussion “Persecuted and Detained: Stories of Crimean Political Prisoners”: NGO CrimeaSOS, Human Rights Centre ZMINA, Human Rights House Foundation, Front Line Defenders, Human Rights Watch supported by the permanent missions of the USA and Ireland in the OSCE. 

Warsaw Human Dimension Conference is a ten-day conference dedicated to discussing the state of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the territory of the OSCE participating States. The conference provides a platform for assessing the fulfilment of OSCE commitments in the field of human rights protection. 

The conference is open to representatives of OSCE participating states, their partners, OSCE institutions and other executive structures, representatives of intergovernmental organizations and civil society.
