CrimeaSOS: russia has created conditions in the occupied territories under which a russian passport is the key to survival

The conditions created by russia in the occupied territories, in particular in Crimea, force Ukrainian citizens to take russian passports in order to survive. CrimeaSOS analyst Yevhenii Yaroshenko told about this in a comment to UNIAN.

“First, the decision of the occupying power in the occupied territories is illegal both from the point of view of Ukrainian legislation and from the point of view of international law. Second, russia has created conditions in the occupied territories where obtaining a russian passport actually became the key to survival, i.e. obtaining such a document is not voluntary, but forced”, – the analyst believes.

However, it is worth remembering that Ukrainians who were forced to receive a passport of the russian federation expose themselves to the danger of forced conscription into the occupation army and participation in the “elections”.

CrimeaSOS lawyer Anastasiia Kalinina emphasizes that since 2014, russia has been using the passport as a manipulation mechanism. “All social benefits, pensions, and other vital services require a russian document. Sometimes taking it is the only possibility to survive for people in the conditions of occupation”, —the lawyer says.

We also remind you that on March 4, 2023, the state duma of the russian federation adopted the federal law “On Peculiarities of the Legal Status of Citizens of the russian federation Who Have Ukrainian Citizenship”. In fact, this “law” aims to forcibly passport the deported and forcibly displaced citizens of Ukraine, including orphans and children left without parental care.
