CrimeaSOS: russian occupiers suppress resistance in Crimea by mass arrests of Crimean Tatars

27 / 01 / 2023

The occupiers continue using mass administrative arrests of Crimean Tatars as a tool to suppress resistance in the occupied Crimea. This was reported by CrimeaSOS analyst Yevhenii Yaroshenko.

“The occupying authorities in Crimea continue using administrative arrests to intimidate the disloyal population and suppress resistance. Thus, on January 26, 2023, court hearings in administrative cases regarding 33 detained Crimean Tatars were held in three occupation “courts” of Simferopol”, — said Yevhenii Yaroshenko.

According to the results of the court hearings, 32 persons were sentenced to administrative arrests for 10 to 16 days. Another person was sentenced to a fine of 20,000 rubles. They were detained by representatives of the rosguard on January 25, 2023, under the building of the “Kyiv district court” in Simferopol, where they came to support six Crimean Tatars detained the day before – after another wave of searches.

“According to international law, these detentions violate the right to freedom of peaceful assembly. In addition, preventing the public from attending a court session may constitute a violation of the right to a fair trial”, – added the analyst.

On the morning of January 24, searches took place in the homes of Crimean Tatars with the participation of FSB officers in the Dzhankoi area of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. After the searches, six people were detained. On January 25, the so-called “Kyiv district court” chose a preventive measure for all six in the form of detention for 2 months.

Since 2021, the occupiers have been mass-detaining people who came out in support of the repressed compatriots. Thus, during the fall of 2021, there were six waves of mass administrative detentions of activists, four of which took place near the building of the occupation court.
