CrimeaSOS: The UN General Assembly is one of the methods of political pressure on russia

The decisions of the UN General Assembly remain one of the effective methods of political pressure on russia. CrimeaSOS analyst Yevhenii Yaroshenko told about this in a comment to Radio Ukraine. 

“There are other forms of soft and political pressure [on russia – ed.]. First of all, the UN General Assembly, where decisions are made by two-thirds of the votes of all present; and a number of resolutions regarding support for Ukraine and condemnation of russian aggression have been adopted since 2014”, — said Yevhenii Yaroshenko.

Since the UN Security Council is paralyzed by russia’s right of veto, it is necessary to adopt resolutions of the UN General Assembly, which are of a recommendatory nature. 

“Unfortunately, we are forced to admit that the main bodies of the UN are structured in such a way that it is impossible to exert any kind of hard pressure on the occupying state due to the fact that the russian federation has the right of veto, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council”, – the analyst added.

Enforced disappearances are one of the criminal methods used by the russian federation to suppress those who disagree with the Kremlin’s position. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, at least 644 people have become victims of enforced disappearances in the occupied territory of the Kherson region alone. 90% of them are held by the occupiers without charge.
