The results of the project on supporting families of Heroes of Heavenly Hundred will be presented in Kyiv

In 2016, a Russian human rights activist Zhanna Nemtsova gave a part of the funds she received from the Polish Solidarity Award* on the assistance for Ukranians. The results of a project on supporting families of fallen heroes of Heavenly Hundred will be presented at a press briefing on Friday, November 18, at 3 p.m. in the Ukrainian crisis media-center press-center.

In 2015, a Russian human rights activist, a daughter of the killed Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov Nemtsov Zhanna Nemtsova won "Award of solidarity." During 2016 thanks to funds allocated by Nemtsova such kinds of assistance were provided:

  • payments of contributions to the families of the Heavenly Hundred, families of doctors and journalists killed in the East of Ukraine, and the families of those defenders killed in Eastern Ukraine who had three or more children;
  • legal support of the families in realization of their rights to receive social benefits.

Overall, the project made it possible for the families of fallen heroes to improve their financial situation and feel the worthy estimation of the heroic deeds of their relatives.

At a press briefing CrimeaSOS coordinator Tamila Tasheva will present the project results in numbers. Also, their word will tell representatives of the Institute of National Remembrance and the family members of the Heavenly Hundred.

In addition, on November 18 the issue of the culture of memory of Heroes of Revolution of Dignity will be discussed in a public debate "New times, new heroes". The event will allow to state the problems and to look for answers to several questions, including:

  • how do people remember the events and participants of mass actions of civil protest 2013-2014?
  • is the memory of the families of Heroes of Heavenly Hundred is important to the society?
  • what should be the politics of memory in contemporary Ukraine?

Family members of Heroes of Heavenly Hundred, representatives of public organizations, activists, participants of the Revolution of Dignity will be present at the discussion. Moderator – Andrii Kulykov. The discussion will start in Ukranian crisis media-center after the press-briefing at 15:20.

In 2015, 187 families of Heroes of Heavvenly Hundred, doctors and journalists killed in Eastern Ukraine and large families received financial support. The funds were provided by Mustafa Dzhemilev, the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada and the leader of Crimean Tatars, from the Solidarity Award, the winner of which he became in 2014.


The project is implemented by NGO "CrimeaSOS" with the support of "Education for Democracy" Foundation and "Boris Nemtsov" Foundation.

Solidarity Award was founded by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Foundation of Lech Walensa and is awarded for outstanding work in the name of the promotion and protection of democracy and civil liberties. Winner receives a statuette and a million euros, most of which he has to spent on support of democracy.
