Yesterday, on the 28th of April, Briefing Security Council on Eastern Ukraine Conflict took place. There was also discussed the situation in Crimea. It is stated in the message of the UN Security Council's press center.
It was reminded about Russian crimes in Crimea at the UN briefing. The briefing was organized in the connection with an escalating violence and political gridlock in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Chief of Staff in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Vadym Prystaiko noted, that at least 11 Ukrainians were held as political prisoners in the Russian Federation, including parliamentarians and native Crimeans. Prystaiko also said, that after the annexation of Crimea 9 Crimean Tatars missing, 20 were kidnapped, against 130 criminal cases are opened.
US Representative Samantha Power added, that since the occupation of Crimea by Russia, Russian authorities equate all the actions of the Crimean Tatar community to crime. She said, that US sanctions against Russia will stay in force as long as the peninsula is occupied.
"It was not a formal meeting of the Security Council. The format, in which it has been held, does not imply a further resolution. The briefing was held on the initiative of Ukrainian side, the idea was to inform about the situation in the occupied territories", — an expert on the international humanitarian law Eugenia Andreiuk explained.
