The U. S. Department of State released a statement, which urges Russia to cancel the decision on the recognition of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People as an extremist organization.
«We urge the Russian Federation to abolish the Ministry of Justice's recent decision on the recognition of the Mejlis of Crimean Tatars as an «extremist» organization, and the decision of de-facto authorities of Crimea to suspend the activities of the democratic institution», – the DOS representative John Kirby said.
He also added that the Mejlis is an important independent voice for the protection of people and their culture from discrimination. Kirby recalls that for a long time the Mejlis has been the representative body of people who suffered from oppressions earlier.
«Russian authorities have no reason to carry out its legislation over Crimean Tatars in Ukraine. The ban of the Mejlis will deprive them of the possibility to hold public events and express their opinion, and it is contravenes the basic democratic principles», – it is said in a statement.
The United States also urged Russia to end its occupation of Crimea. In addition, they reiterated that sanctions against Russia would remain in force as long as the occupation continues.
