On May 25, Minister of Temporarily Occupied Territories and IDPs of Ukraine Vadym Chernysh presented the draft bill of the Law of Ukraine «On recognition of individuals, deprived of personal freedom under political motives as a result of decisions taken by the authorities of the Russian Federation, as political prisoners; and on providing the said individuals state social aid». This is informed on the Governmental portal.
«Such law by Ukraine means not only deep respect for the citizens who fight for its territorial integrity, but also support for them and their families. We should render aid to the citizens who chose the path of resistance to the Russian terror, at the state level. This should be not only moral, but also material support», – Minister Vadym Chernysh underlined.
Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for the Affairs of Crimean Tatars Mustafa Dzhemilev noted that such draft bill had a significant moral meaning.
«The state must support those who fight for it. There are 40 political prisoners at the moment, 22 of them are Crimean Tatars. The bill provides for social benefits and monetary payments for them. This is very important, as when a person is jailed, they usually have a family. It often happens so that a political prisoner is the only breadwinner in the family, and the family needs to be supported», – Mustafa Dzhemilev said.
The draft bill provides for monthly monetary payments to political prisoners, or their families in the amount of two minimal monthly wages, compensation of the expenses for legal assistance, medical examination and sanatorium therapy, and the right for their children to be accepted to higher educational establishments of Ukraine non-competitively.
