Renowed Crimean lawyer Emil Kurbedinov has been honoured with the Front Line Defenders award for HR Defenders at Risk 2017. Lawyer Edem Semedlyayev informed this on Facebook.
«Me, my colleagues and our clients realize that criminal cases would end in a guilty verdict anyway, but we believe we lost no case, as we assess such cases not by verdicts, but by the way the persecuted persons behave, those who are held in prisons and under arrest. All of them show the example of bravery, they insist on their position and don’t give up», – Emil Kurbedinov said.
The human rights defender stressed the necessity for the peaceful struggle for human rights.
«This award is very important for me personally and for the whole human rights community of the Crimea, as well as for the persecuted people. It will draw the attention of the international community to the human rights violations and the Crimea and will keep the Crimea on the international agenda. It gives us not only the symbolic protection, but shows the victims of the violations that they are not forgotten», – the lawyer added.

Executive Director of the Front Line Defenders Andrew Anderson noted at the ceremony that the international community was going through the «dark hour».
«I would like to say that despite the tragedy unfolding in the Crimea in the last three years since the Russian occupation, Emil is an inspiring example. The fact that Emil continues to protect human rights in a place that was largely abandoned by the international community, where the rule of law is not respected and where abductions and even worse crimes occur, shows exceptional dedication and faithfulness to the principles», – Anderson said.
Let us remind, lawyer Emil Kurbedinov has become a laureate of the annual international award Front Line Defenders for Human Rights Defenders at Risk 2017.
The annual award Front Line Defenders for Human Rights Defenders at Risk was established in 2005, to honor the work of human rights defenders who, without resorting to violence, bravely make an outstanding contribution to the promotion and protection of the rights of others, often at great risk to themselves.
