CrimeaSOS: only 5% of children born under the occupation received a Ukrainian birth certificate

2 / 12 / 2022

Since 2014, only 5% of children born in russian-occupied territories have received a Ukrainian birth certificate. This was reported by CrimeaSOS lawyer Anna Rassamakhina during a webinar for employees of the Office of the Ombudsman of Ukraine.

“According to preliminary estimates by CrimeaSOS, 270,000 children were born in the russian-occupied territories of Ukraine since 2014. By 2021, only 13,000 of them had a Ukrainian birth certificate. This is only about 5% of all born children”, — Anna Rassamakhina said.

After the start of the full-scale invasion, the number of applications for Ukrainian birth certificates for children born in the occupied territories increased significantly.

“Nevertheless, the ability of Ukrainian judges to consider these cases is limited – due to workload and constant shelling”, —the lawyer added.

We shall remind you that residents of the occupied Crimea and newly occupied territories can issue a birth certificate remotely. To do this, one needs to sign an electronic contract with a lawyer and apply to court

On December 1, CrimeaSOS held the first webinar for employees of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Ombudsman’s Office). This was the first event in a series of webinars on establishing the fact of birth in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
