Some of them, the FSB officers in particular, mixed up in their testimonies.

Today, on June 7, the Simferopol district court held the first session at merits in the case of the Medjlis deputy head Ilmi Umerov, as reported by the QirimInfo correspondent.

The criminal case against Ilmi Umerov was started under Article 280.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, «public calls for committing actions aimed at violation of the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation».

In the course of today’s session, the party of the defense petitioned to involve renown Russian human rights lawyer Alexander Podrabinek as a civil defender. The court satisfied this petition despite the prosecutor’s protests.

The defense also filed a petition to postpone the court session as not all the laweyers managed to appear in court today. The court turned down this petition.

Lawyer Emil Kurbedinov told that six witnesses had been interrogated this day: two FSB officers, two representatives of the society and two friends of Ilmi Umerov.

«Ilmi Umerov’s friends only confirmed that he had been in Ukraine, travelled to Ukraine, someone knew about it etc. », – the lawyer told.

Kurbedinov noted that the defense had certain questions to the representatives of the society as they didn’t know the Crimean Tatar language so it remained unclear which video with Ilmi Umerov they had seen.

«The FSB officer also doesn’t know the Crimean Tatar language, and I asked him a question, why this very person, who didn’t speak any Crimean Tatar, had picked this very video when monitoring the web? We heard no comprehensive reply to that », – Kurbedinov stated.

The lawyer informed that today’s session was mostly dedicated to solving technical issues. In turn, the defense stated that Ilmi Umerov did not admit guilt and was being persecuted solely for his political views.
