Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Valeria Lutkovska asked the Russian Ombudsman Tatiana Moskalkova to intervene in the situation with the transfer of Ukrainian political prisoners, Crimeans Oleg Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko to Ukraine and to verify the legal grounds for the acquisition of Russian citizenship.
It is reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Ombudsman.
Lutkovska sent to the address of Moskalkova letter concerning the forced acquiring citizenship of the Russian Federation to citizens of Ukraine, who were living in Crimea during the annexation, and could not appeal to the Migration Service within the prescribed time limit to renounce Russian citizenship, and also because they were in places of detention at that time.
According to her, the issue is becoming increasingly important due to the fact that because of having Russian citizenship, which was acquired to Sentsov and Kolchenko automatically, the Ministry of Justice had refused to transfer them to Ukraine for further serving their sentence.
"Automatic acquisition of Russian citizenship for those persons who could not abandon it for various reasons, is actually forced", — Lutkovska notes in the letter .
On October 21 Russian Ministry of Justice responded to the Ukrainian request for the extradition of political prisoners Oleg Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko. Russia refused to transfer the Ukrainians, asserting that after the annexation of the Crimea, they are automatically acquired Russian citizenship, despite the fact that in March 2016 the Russian Federation recognized them citizens of Ukraine.
On October 24 Ukrainian Ombudsman Valeriya Lutkovska said that the Ukrainian side will turn to Russia with the requirement to explain the reasons for the refusal to extradite Ukrainian political prisoners, Crimeans Oleg Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko.
On October 25 Commissioner for Human Rights in Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova said that convicted in Russia Crimeans Oleg Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko can not be transferred to Ukraine, if they have Russian citizenship.
